Poopy Title Portends Book Branding Calamity

Cosmic_cow_pie

I read a very good book this summer, a pre-publication draft of Cosmic Cow Pie … Connecting the Dots by Carra Riley, a semi-retired real estate agent in Northern Arizona.  The book is a quick read and a nice little primer on developing successful interpersonal relations.  At first blush I thought the Cosmic Cow Pie branding was curious, original, and a little brave.

I have to wonder about alternatives Riley considered before selecting this title. Linguistic connoisseurs might prefer Cosmic Cow Crap for an alliterative fix.

I’ve revisited the notion of cow pie branding and reached the conclusion that poop is not appealing.  The web site entreaty,

I would like to be your new best friend in the Cosmic Cow Pie. I help people connect the dots in the universe of flying obstacles to find balance and have fun.

… finds me ducking  cow pie meteors hurling through space in my dreams.

Consider invitations to join cow dung communities on various social networks:

This group is for individuals who want to navigate the universe of flying obstacles known as the "Cosmic Cow Pie" together to help find balance. We will share ideas of what is currently working to get through today's Real Estate Market and try not to step in the "stuff" aka Cow Pies! Anyone wanting to have some fun with the cow pies we have to deal with on a daily basis should join this group. (ActiveRain Group)

Cosmic Cow Pie....Connecting The Dots, is a fun read which suggests how to make sense of the proverbial flying obstacles in the universe from an exciting perspective.  (Facebook Fan Page)

See what I mean?

Do you have fun with cow pies?

Who has fun with cow pies?

I am sadly cheated as a reviewer because branding discussion tied to bovine excrement precludes the use of numerous sensory descriptors.

I cannot talk about the flavor of cosmic cow pie branding without grabbing a bottle of Listerine and a toothbrush.

I dare not use words like touch and touched without looking for prescription strength antibacterial scrub.

Visuals find me back in the cosmos, dodging meteors and brown, smelly asteroids.

Branding should support a book, not overshadow it. Riley wrote a very good book. It might stand a reasonable chance for success with an equally good title.
